NASA Technology Readiness Level

Understanding Innovation from Concept to Launch

What is Technology Readiness Level?

Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is a scale developed by NASA to measure the maturity of a technology. It helps organizations understand how ready a technology is for real-world use, from initial concept to full deployment.

The scale ranges from TRL 1 (basic principles) to TRL 9 (proven system in operational environment).

TRL Phases

Technology Readiness Levels are grouped into three main phases of development:

Research Phase (TRL 1-3)

Focus: Basic research and proof of concept

  • TRL 1: Basic principles observed
  • TRL 2: Technology concept formulated
  • TRL 3: Proof of concept demonstrated

Development Phase (TRL 4-6)

Focus: Component validation and system integration

  • TRL 4: Component validation in laboratory
  • TRL 5: Component validation in relevant environment
  • TRL 6: System/subsystem model demonstrated

Deployment Phase (TRL 7-9)

Focus: System testing and operational deployment

  • TRL 7: System prototype in operational environment
  • TRL 8: System complete and qualified
  • TRL 9: System proven in operational environment
